Bollywood Actors Who Got Makeovers for Movies

Amitabh Bachchan
When it comes to acting, the Paa of B-Town proved yet again that no one can pull off a difficult role with as much ease as he could. Bachchan Sr went the whole hog for a role that required him to play a 13-yearold child suffering from Progeria, a rare medical condition where the victim ages rapidly physically, but mentally ages normally. Big B wore prosthetic makeup and specially designed dentures to effortlessly replicate the voice of a 13-year old child. It used to take four to five hours daily for Bachchan Sr’s makeup to be done and two hours to remove it. That’s dedication!

Ranbir Kapoor
While many young actors would shy away from ageing on screen, RK broke the rules by playing a 60-yearold in his next release Barfi. He went a step further and has even played an old man convincingly for an ad film. The young actor, who has a huge female fan following, was unafraid to wear ‘old man’ clothes, bald wig and look unbecoming. Shah Rukh Khan did the same in Veer Zara.

Priyanka Chopra
In 7 Khoon Maaf Priyanka Chopra’s character ages from 20-65 and prosthetics played a large part in her transformation. Director Vishal Bhardwaj hired renowned Academy Award winning, Hollywood special make-up effects artist, Greg Cannom of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) fame, to create those seven different looks for Priyanka’s role in the film.

Emraan Hashmi
Emraan is the most recent example of an actor trading good looks to 'look the part'. With crude body language, a pot belly and stained teeth in Shanghai, he managed to get both the audience and critics to take notice. He had loads of pasta, which helped make his paunch look very obvious. And right now, after the release he has the critics eating out of his hands.

Sanjay Dutt
To look menacing as Kaancha Cheena in Agneepath, Dutt shaved off his head. Although that was not the original plan, he found it painful to spend several hours in make up each day for prosthetics. Furthermore, it was very hot in Diu, where majority of the film was shot, making it more unbearable. One day, Dutt decided it would be easier to shave off his head, sacrificing his hair for the part.

Saif Ali Khan
He broke away from his suave, lover-boy image. He ditched the metrosexual look for a rustic makeover in Omkara. Sporting an unkempt look, earrings, buzzed hair, and the body language of a ruffian, Saif looked nothing like himself. The Nawab of Pataudi literally looked and played the part of a goon with grey shades.

Abhishek Bachchan
Going from lean to fat is not easy, but if you are working with a director like Mani Ratnam, you have to give it your all and make it happen. Bachchan Jr did just that for his role in Guru and piled on the kilos. Binging on ice cream and chocolates for several days soon took its toll as eating became boring, and all the actor wanted to do was shed that extra weight.

Hrithik Roshan
You will be forgiven for believing that Hrithik Roshan was born with fab abs. He is undoubtedly one of B-Town’s fittest actors. However for Guzaarish, where he plays a paralysed man, he grew his hair and beard for months and put on weight. He had to eat and drink everything considered a no-no for a top star. Street food like vada pau, samosas, etc, became part of his diet. The effects were drastic enough for everyone to sit up and take notice. Of course, he quickly lost all the weight and went back to looking like an Adonis.

Vidya Balan
Always criticised for not having the perfect body, it got to a point where Balan decided to prove a point to detractors and whipped herself into an enviable shape. Then she piled on the pounds for the sake of The Dirty Picture. For an actress being in a fit and fabulous form on screen is a given. It was a bold step to put on weight and flaunt belly and back fat on screen. The move could’ve backfired. But Vidya took the risk and has walked away with a number of awards including a national award for the best actress. It was a first in the history of Hindi cinema.

Other actors who have done it in past:
Shashi Kapoor put on weight for his supporting role in Girish Karnad’s Utsav (1984). Actress Shabana Azmi gained a lot of weight for Mandi, but managed to shed it. A few years later she shaved off her locks for Deepa Mehta’s film Water. Like Shabana Azmi, actress Nandita Das did the same. Aamir Khan followed a strict diet for 3 Idiots to look younger. He went on a diet to lose weight and drank at least four litres of water a day, to keeps his skin fresh. He also played a lot of games like badminton
